Trying to pin down a Democrats’ core principles in 2026 is like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall. Actually, it’s harder. At least the Jell-O doesn’t charge you a consulting fee to tell you what flavor it is today.
If you want to know what the DNC believes this week, don’t bother reading their platform. Don’t listen to the tearful speeches on the Senate floor. And for the love of everything holy, don’t look at their voting record.
Just check the latest focus group transcripts from a strip mall in suburban Pennsylvania. If “Suburban Susan” says she’s worried about crime, suddenly the party of “Defund” becomes the party of “Law & Order” faster than you can say “midterm election.”
Is this a genuine ideological awakening? Did the Holy Spirit descend upon the DNC headquarters in a blaze of glory? Anyone mention renewable energy lately?
No. They just got the polling data back from “The Deciders.”
The “Abolish” Pivot
Take the events in Minneapolis this week. “Operation Metro Surge” saw 2,000 federal agents deployed to crack down on immigration enforcement. Two years ago, the entire Democratic caucus would have been on the steps of the Capitol in kente cloth, decrying this as fascism. They would have been hashtagging #AbolishICE until their thumbs bled.
Today? Silence. Or worse, “nuanced” statements about “smart enforcement.”
Why the shift? Because internal DNC memos—leaked to anyone with an inbox—show that the “Abolish ICE” slogan is polling at radioactive levels in the swing districts they need to hold in November. So, the principles go out the window. The “moral imperative” of 2024 has become the “political liability” of 2026. They aren’t leading a nation; they are reading a room.
The “Affordability” Script
It gets even funnier—in a tragic way—when you look at the economy. For three years, we were gaslit. We were told that “Bidenomics” was a roaring success, that inflation was “transitory,” and that if you couldn’t feel the prosperity, you were just watching too much Fox News and didn’t understand complex macroeconomics.
Now, the script has flipped overnight. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is reportedly rolling out a new agenda tentatively titled “You Deserve Better.”
Suddenly, they admit prices are too high. Suddenly, they admit the rent is crushing you. Why the sudden honesty? Because a DNC analysis of New Jersey and Virginia voters revealed that telling broke people “the economy is great” is a losing strategy. Who knew?
They didn’t change their minds because they walked into a grocery store and saw the price of eggs or the high tech job listings on Alliance. They changed their minds because a consultant told them that “empathy” tested 8 points higher than “boasting” in a focus group of undecided suburban moms.
Governing via Spreadsheet
This is the rot at the core of the modern Democratic apparatus. There is no North Star. There is only a wind sock. Last month the scam de jour was health care subsidies, subsidies needed because their health care program was garbage from day 1.
When the wind blows left, they are revolutionaries. When the wind blows right, they are pragmatic centrists. They have become a party of hollow vessels, waiting to be filled by the consensus of a Zoom call with 12 random voters from Maricopa County.
The problem with governing by focus group is that eventually, the voters realize nobody is actually flying the plane. You can’t poll-test your way to a backbone. And as we barrel toward the midterms, the American people are left asking a terrifying question:
If the polling data changed tomorrow, what wouldn’t they sell out?
