Is Stephen A. Smith the Democrats’ Joe DiMaggio?

Stephen A. Smith

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?A nation turns its lonely eyes to you—or, in this case, to a guy who usually spends his mornings yelling about the NBA playbook like he wrote it himself.

As we careen toward the 2026 midterms and look ahead to the 2028 cycle, the Democratic Party has officially entered its “Post-Reality” era. It’s a slow-motion car crash where the goal isn’t winning voters—it’s competing in the “Advanced Stage TDS” Olympics. The political field has drifted so far left it’s unrecognizable to anyone who pays a mortgage or shops for eggs.

The Germany Gaffes: A Study in Absurdity

Take, for instance, the recent European tour of our two favorite luminaries: Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Newsom, the man who has successfully turned California into a high-budget remake of Mad Max with better hair products, recently told a crowd at the Munich Security Conference that American climate policy is “dumb.” Truly, the height of statesman-like grace. As California struggles with blackouts and outbound U-Hauls, Gavin is apologizing to Germans for American energy policy. It’s almost impressive. He can see a homeless encampment in San Francisco and think, “What this needs is more lecturing from Bavaria.”

Then we have AOC. Speaking in Munich just yesterday, she accused the current administration of ushering in an “age of authoritarianism.” She stood on foreign soil advocating “working-class-centered politics,” even as workers in Pennsylvania and Michigan ask for fewer regulations and cheaper gas. It was a masterclass in the “Dumber Things Competition,” telling allies America is a fascist wasteland because we fund our own border instead of a so-called “rules-based order.”

Enter the Non-Lunatic: Stephen A. Smith

And then, appearing like a sane man in a padded cell, comes Stephen A. Smith.

The ESPN firebrand has recently moved from speculating on the Lakers’ cap space to speculating on the Democratic nomination. And here’s the kicker: he’s actually making sense. Smith has been everywhere—from Hannity to Cuomo—warning that Democrats can’t beat a Vance or Rubio ticket if they keep the “whack-job” energy at full volume.

Smith is an Independent by registration, but a pragmatist by nature. He is the only “potential candidate” who realizes that shouting “Authoritarian!” isn’t a winning strategy.

The Odds: Can a Straight Shooter Win?

Surprisingly, the JoeWager type betting markets are listening. On Kalshi and BetOnline, Smith has surged into the top five 2028 Democratic contenders, alongside Newsom and Shapiro.

  • Implied Odds: Roughly 7% to 10% (and rising).
  • Person-to-Person Markets: On decentralized exchanges, Smith is often traded at higher premiums than established governors like JB Pritzker or Andy Beshear.

The logic is simple: in a world of robotic talking points, authenticity is the new currency. Even if you hate his take on the Cowboys, you know Stephen A. believes what he’s saying. In a party accused of chasing trends on gender and border policy, he stands out.

Should Conservatives be Worried?

For the Right, the rise of a “Non-Lunatic” Democrat presents a dilemma. Do we embrace a guy who actually loves America and just wants better schools and a fair economy? Or should we be terrified that the Left might accidentally find a candidate who doesn’t repel every swing voter in a 500-mile radius?

My take? Conservatives should welcome it. A healthy Republic needs two sane parties. If the Democrats want to stop the “TDS” spiral and nominate someone who can actually hold a conversation without using the word “problematic,” let them try.

A debate between Stephen A. Smith and JD Vance wouldn’t just be high-stakes—it would be electric television. At the very least, we’d finally have a Democrat who knows how to take a loss without calling for a rewrite of the Constitution.
